When it comes to long-term change, knowledge is power. To join in a debate you need to be aware of the facts. To get things done, you need to know how the system works. But navigating the corridors of power can be frustrating. We want to make sure that every deaf person who wants to campaign for change has the information and tools they need. That’s why we run our How to … Lobby your MP training workshops.
Since March 2014, DeafLondon has successfully trained over 80 deaf people on how to lobby their MPs for change. Whether you want to improve access to council services or campaign for a BSL Act, our How to … workshops provide an overview of how UK parliament works; a deaf perspective on lobbying; and advice on how to work effectively with your interpreter to achieve results. It’s not all talk, talk, talk, attendees get the chance to practice meeting their MP through a series of role play activities.
At the end of the day, participants tell us they feel more prepared and ready to meet their MPs to lobby for change. From the last event held in March 2015 we learnt that:
- 90% of respondents found the training useful;
- 86% had learnt something new to help them lobby their MP;
- 74% felt ready to meet their MP.
Keep an eye on our website for details of future workshops.
